A Concise Analysis of the Abstract of a Research Article
The abstract in the research article "A study of opinion of teachers towards the cooperative learning strategy" can be classified as indicative since it mainly describes what kind of research has been done (Swales and Feak, 1994). As regards its organizational format, the abstract begins with an introductory sentence which indicates the objective of the study. However, this information is unnecessarily repeated in the second sentence, which fails to add relevant details. Moreover, there seems to be no conclusion, in which, according to Swales and Feak (1994) the authors should have restated the most important ideas in the abstract. As far as content is concerned, the writers do well in mentioning in the participants of their study and in reporting the main findings; however, no reference to the methods applied has been made. With reference to linguistic characteristics, the abstract contains many inaccuracies in grammar and punctuation as well as repetitions of words and phrases.
